Xativa and Ontinyent

Welcome to "Xativa Ontinyent", an online source for information relating to the Costa Blanca town of Xativa and Ontinyent and their surrounding areas.

Xativa

Pronounced "HAT-TI-VA" locally and in Alicante, but in the Valencia region it is known as Jàtiva and pronounced "SHAT-TI-VA".

Xativa is a historic and traditional Spanish town, just 40 minutes from Valencia and its Manises airport, and the sandy beaches of the Costa Blanca. The main street consists of a boulevard of lush trees providing a natural canopy for the numerous fashionable shops, cafes and bars. The town also boasts a magnificent medieval castle fringing the surrounding.

The countryside around these regions is breathtaking. Take a drive through the surrounding villages of Enguera, Chella and Anna, to name just three of this area’s wonderful little Spanish villages

Xativa's cultural monuments include La Colegiata de Santa Maria (from the 14th century) in the Renaissance style, La Ermita de San Felix (13th Century), La Ermita de San Jose (18th century), La Ermita de Santa Ana (16th century), La Iglesia de San Pedro (17th century), Hospital Mayor de Pobres (15th to 16th centuries), the La Puerta Gótica de los Trinitarios (15th century), the church of San Francisco (14th century) and of course its castle with remains from various centuries, featuring 30 towers and 4 fortified gateways .

Xativa/Jativa has plenty to offer; history, modern cafés, bars and restaurants, commercial centres, theatres, cinemas and parks. The countryside that surrounds it is also something to be admired. Awash with fruit trees such as orange, mandarin and lemon along with numerous almond, cherry and apricot; springtime blossom in Xativa/Jativa (from February to May) is an incredible spectacle in itself.

Market day in Xativa is on a Tuesday (from 10.00am), a good place to pick up a gift or two, a smaller market is held on Fridays, there is also a food market held in nearby Genoves on Wednesdays.

Xativa of course has its share of festivals and these include the Fallas (March), Corpus Christi (June), Fira D'Agost or August Fair (August), not forgetting the numerous Christmas and Easter (Semana Santa) celebrations.

Xativa is linked by train to Valencia and can be accessed from the N-340, the A-7 and the AP-7.

Ontinyent

Located to the north-west of Alcoy and Cocentaina, and to the south of Xativa, Ontinyent (in Valencian, Onteniente in Spanish) is a municipality in the comarca of Vall d'Albaida in the Valencian Community, Spain. It is situated on the right bank of the Clariano or Ontinyent, a sub-tributary of the Júcar, and on the Xàtiva–Villena railway.

With its population of 36,368 (2006), Ontinyent has two distinct areas, the old (formerly walled) town and the modern industrial suburbs. The old town ‘La Vila’ still retains much of its old world charm, with narrow winding streets lined with ancient houses.

Ontinyent grew around the textile industry, which has been its main source of income since the Middle Ages, the industry developed due to the abundance of water which propelled the numerous water mills still found in the area. Other industries in Ontinyent include furniture, earthenware, paper, brandy and wine, there has been a rapid increase in population over the last 50 years and almost half of it is employed in the various textiles industries.

As with many Spanish towns, the most important fiesta in Ontinyent is the spectacular Moors and Christians festival which is held in August, other significant festivals include the fiesta of Sant Antoni (January), the Fallas (March), the Fira (November) and the Purisma (December).

Places of interest to visit in Ontinyent include the aforementioned church of Santa Maria, originally from the 13th century, the Plaza Mayor (Town Square), where you will find many old buildings including the old town hall, the Casa del Consell, dating from the 16th century, the Almodi (16th century), the Comtes de Torrefeil Palace (15th -17th centuries) and Els Porxets (the Porticoes) from the 16th century.

Ontinyent is within the district of Vall d’Albaida in the province of Valencia and is situated on the CV-81, north-west of Cocentaina, it is located centrally between Alicante and Valencia and is about 85 kilometres from both cities.

Trains and buses run from and to the local towns in the area, but giving the option of going further a field to Valencia City. Museums, departments stores, and city life are short journey away. With the recently built CV60 road the blue flag beaches at Gandia are only 45 minutes drive away. Both Alicante and Valencia airports are 1 hour drive away also.

Ontinyent enjoys a fine Mediterranean climate with plenty of sunshine and low rainfall, the town generally experiences long hot summers and mild winters, most of the rain which does fall occurs during the winter months.
